Investment diligence, the central mandate of Russo's consulting practice, rebuilds the numbers behind a proposal rather than reviewing the ones supplied

United States, 12th Sep 2026 - When a client brings consultant Vincent D. Russo, Ph.D., a proposal someone wants them to fund, his first question is rarely about the projected return. It is about whether the underlying claims can be verified at all.
"Somebody has put a proposal in front of the client. The pitch has already done its job of sounding attractive," Russo said. “My job starts after that. It is not whether it's attractive. It's whether it's true.”
Investment diligence is what Russo calls the central mandate of his consulting practice, alongside asset sourcing and transaction security. It covers ownership and encumbrance on the underlying asset, the provenance of the asset and of the money behind it, and the arithmetic in the projection.
"I rebuild the numbers rather than review them," Russo said. “Reviewing a spreadsheet someone else built tells you whether it's internally consistent. Rebuilding it from the source documents tells you whether it's true. Those are very different exercises, and only one of them is diligence.”
He extends the same standard to the people involved. "Who they are, what they've done before, and whether anyone has actually said so in writing," Russo said. “A track record that only exists as a verbal claim is not a track record. It's a sentence.”
Russo says the work draws on habits formed earlier in his career inside financial institutions, where a recommendation had to survive contact with the client's own scrutiny, not just sound convincing in the room. "Institutions taught me that being persuasive and being correct are not the same skill," he said. “This mandate exists entirely in the space between them.”
He is careful to frame the mandate's limits as clearly as its scope. "I'm not providing legal or tax advice, and I'm not managing anyone's money," Russo said. “I'm answering one question as rigorously as I can: does this proposal hold up against the record? What the client does with that answer is entirely theirs to decide.”
Russo works with a limited number of clients at a time from his base in the United States, a structure he attributes to the sustained attention that verifying a proposal properly requires.
